OK....just an alert. Even if one checks "no" on auto-renew, somehow magically your domain name will be renewed.....a MONTH before its renewal date!
That was my experience this week (April 2021). When I called, the rep said that "it's policy". Offered a refund....and when I got the email acknowledging the refund (24-hours later)....there was a $10 deduction. For what, I don't know.
So....ticked off, I initiated a transfer of the domain to Godaddy. Via chat. A half-hour later, I get the EPP Code and told that the domain is unlocked. Go to Godaddy...but...the EPP Code doesn't work. Go back to Register.com again....a 40-minute wait....and the rep says that the EPP Code is being emailed. Email comes with the....same code. Back to Godaddy. It doesn't work. Back to Register.com and another 45-minute wait on chat (even though the chat-window says I'm next in que and an approximate 30-second wait - sure, hah!). Demand a new EPP Code...and finally get one and it works.
I should be charging Register.com the $10 for time wasted.
They have become a HORRIBLE company. Find another, if you value your time...
UPDATE - April 10 2021
So....Register.com just sent an email....for a "receipt of payment" for the domain I had transferred to Godaddy on April 5!
Which means, now I have to fight AGAIN to get a refund...for something that they no longer have.
Wonder if I will get a full refund....$50 or some weird deduction of $10 for a $40 like last week.
They seem to skim and do things so that it's almost a loss just to fight in terms of time vs. money....especially since they don't have weekend support. Yes....not chat or phone support on weekends!!!
A dime skimmed here, a dime skimmed there....this company should be put out of business.

Just for folks reading this: Do NOT even bother writing an "email" to Register.com's support. You will simply get a robo-response tell you to call....
Here is what I got:

Another update.
Even after spending 1+ hour on the phone with Register on April 26 to get the company to delete my account and credit card on-file, and the rep generating a ticket for a hard-delete....to which I responded with the required language....my account is STILL active....along with my credit card on file.
In an era when everything gets hacked - the Pentagon, department stores, healthcare systems - there is no desire to have a company ill-run such as Register.com to have my account info and credit card on file.
This is probably the top of the horrible experience in my 20+ years of IT career. I inherited over 30+ domains under register.com at my job and it took almost 6 months to complete the transfer-out process. I spent countless hours dealing with their customer service, averaging 30 - 1 hour wait at the phone listening to their stupid waiting music. I just don't see any reason for a sane person to subscribe to their services. As an individual consumer, there are cheaper options and WAY better customer service who care about your business. As a business consumer, their infrastructure is severely outdated with horrible customer support. Uninformed people will probably subscribe to their service due to their popular domain name (register.com) but please do your research before falling into the trap.

Do not use Register.com.
I have been using them for 12years and spent a fortune. Yet recently due to a renewal error, they deleted my main email account. They are still charging me for the Domain and the email hosting but have refused to relink the two. They also run Web.com which was the platform they moved my email too. They now refuse to even answer my complaints, still charging me for services I no longer get from them and hey I have lost all my emails too. It has impacted my business and caused terrible stress. The staff as false and just ignore complaints and zero interest in helping customers. They said they would restore the email account, but only for $200. Even though it was their fault.
Update: I paid the $200. They then contacted me and said they nolonger hosted my account (untrue as they are charging me) and would not be helping restore the emails. No refund, just a con to get $200 and bank a commission.
As I say please do not use these guys.
If anyone has any ideas on how to force these guys to provide services you pay for, let me know.
Can I give zero stars?
A horrible company to deal with. When you try to transfer out they put on road block in front of another.
Avoid like the plague.

Terrible hosting company. Working to move my hosting and almost 20 domain names.
Mafia-style company that will extort you with whatever it needs to do to get you to renew at outrageous prices. If you don't renew at their outrageous $38 / year rate, and instead wish to transfer out, good luck with that. While other registrars send your transfer code immediately, they say they'll need "3 days" while they hold your domain hostage bringing you ever closer to expiration and forced renewal. They'll scrutinize every last character of your registration and find some ridiculous reason to hold up your transfer code. Basically, renew with them at their outrageous prices or you're going to lose your domain. This should be a crime. No matter how cheap or enticing the initial offer, stay away, you will eventually be sorry.
Update: asked for transfer codes and my account was "locked" for suspicious activity. It was to be locked for "30 days" which miraculously is just the amount of time until the domains expired. Then magically, although I set the AUTORENEW off and locked my credit card to prevent their criminal billing, not only did they renew my domain names at $76 per domain, they somehow found a credit card to a DIFFERENT account that I had never used with this Register.com account.
Another loyal customer of over 20 years, let down by woefully inadequate communications between the excellent "front-end" support, and the "back-end" office that cannot possibly speak to customers. I responded to an email to update my domain name - but Register.com didn't take payment, and renewal lapsed in to a "Redemption" state which took us offline for two weeks into a redemption hell. If that wasn't bad enough, Register.com saw fit to take us offline again a week after we managed to get back online because a duplicate invoice hadn't been paid - shocking bad service for a customer that has stayed loyal to them since the late 90's when there were only a few registrars. We will be moving our services to another registrar, I wholeheartedly recommend you do the same if you value your business and customers.
Horrible company. I've been getting charged monthly but they are no longer sending me invoices, and it is very difficult to get in contact with the company. I've tried to handle this but my password wasn't working and they did not send me the reset though they said they did (I checked the spam and such), so I contacted the company. They sent an email to reset, and it is ridiculous. Reseting your password requires a drivers license with an address that matches a utility bill you also have to submit, which is very difficult because the DMV doesn't issue new IDs when you change your address, they only do when your license expires. You ALSO need a notarized statement, all three are required just to get access. Their customer service is terrible, you can't find an email to contact them anywhere. Everything takes you to a sign in page or a "brilliant" help page that tells you to sign in to contact customer service. The phone number is endless automated options, and the chat says there's nobody available. I'm usually a patient person but they have been charging me for a service I don't use and it is very difficult to contact them.
I have been with Register.com for a web site and e-mails for almost 20 years. The renewal was in November, 2020. They took my money and now my business e-mails do not work. I have opened numerous tickets, but to no avail. I am in the UK and have telephoned, whereby one call cost over $20.00 dollars. Other call go unanswered. I have asked in one ticket to register a compliant. When I perused their site the following day, the ticket had been removed ! They now do not reply to any of the tickets I open. Appalling Company with no customer service and nowhere and no one to make a complaint to – how can they be allowed to run such a Company in America !

I have been client of this company for almost 20 years. The service keeps deteriorating. The latest that just happened now left me shocked: After almost a month trying to renew my domain (site not completing the order and phone calls very delayed), I spent two hours on the phone with their customer services in Manilla. After the representative said all done and charged my card, I got confirmation by email that she renewed domains that I did not ask for and one was not even mine. I have no words to express my shock.
If you need any customer support, ever, find another company.
You will wait on the phone for hours, and then just give up.
I don't believe customer support even exists.
Don't use this company !
AWFUL !!!!
